Analyse your business

An accurate assessment of your business is essential as it will provide the basis for your business continuity plan.

The better you understand your business the better you are equipped to make changes to enhance your business and improve your resilience.

Start by asking yourself some questions.  For example:
What is crucial to keep the business going?
What would be the worst thing that could happen to the business?
Where is the business most vulnerable?
Which staff perform critical roles?
What would happen if I didn’t have my current suppliers?
What would we do if our IT systems failed?
What would we do if we lost our building?
How do our customers get to us and what would happen if that route was removed?
What would happen if we missed our deadlines?
What are our strengths and how resilient are they?
Do we have any contingency plans in place?
How much could you afford to lose if an emergency prevented you from doing business for days, weeks or months?
How would customers (or prospective customers) respond if you received adverse publicity due to being unprepared for an incident?

The list of questions is not exhaustive.

This stage of the process will help to gain the involvement and understanding of other people within your business and will also help identify any plans or procedures already in-place to deal with an unplanned event.
