Develop your plan

The plan provides the framework from which to mobilise the response to an emergency.

Once your strategy has been decided upon, the plan can be put in place and resources directed where they are most needed.

Some points to consider

  • Use checklists that can be easily followed
  • Don’t use technical language so that it can be understood by everyone
  • Always include deputies to cover key roles
  • Include direct instructions for the critical first hour after an incident
  • Agree how often you will check your plan – you do not want to be in the position of having an out of date plan
  • Include a list of plan holders (which MUST be kept up to date)
  • Include a description or layout of your premises
  • Find out what the emergency services/utilities/insurers need to know in the event of an incident
  • Do you need to be fully operational to survive?
